The Rules Of Color For A Harmoniously Decorated Home

November 8, 2023 by Adrienne Hughes Leave a Comment

Have you fallen victim to a beige home? It’s understandable! Embracing color in your space in an elegant and cohesive way can feel impossible, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, certain rules of color can make the interior design process infinitely easier. With a little bit of planning ahead and a strong color palette, your home will be completely transformed, bringing balance and that perfect pop of color.

The Rules Of Color For A Harmoniously Decorated Home - Adrienne Hughes - Hughes & Company - Texas Real Estate - Austin Real Estate

Let’s take a look at the most important rules of color for a harmonious space!

The Mood Rule

Before you even think of picking out colors for a space, you must first decide on a mood. Color plays a critical role in human emotions and can transform the atmosphere with a single change. The psychology of color is a fascinating tool that interior designers wield when planning a space. Think of the rooms where you feel the most relaxed. Spas utilize calming and unimposing warm and cool color combinations like whites, beiges, blues, and greens to cultivate a tranquil feeling instantly upon entering the room. In contrast, a library or home office might utilize deeper hues to invoke an inspirational, creative thinking atmosphere. It all has to do with color!

The Rule Of Threes

It’s important not to overwhelm a space with color unless, of course, you’re embracing a maximalist design. The rule of thumb with interior designers is three colors. While the more adept colorist might adopt a more complex line of thinking with these three colors, the concept is straightforward. The three colors to consider when designing a balanced space are the primary color, complementary color, and accent color.

The 60-30-10 Rule

Working hand-in-hand with the rule of threes, the 60-30-10 rule helps to create a cohesive design by using the three colors in varying amounts. The primary color should take up a majority of the space (60%), while the complementary color should work in conjunction with the primary and satisfy 30% of the space. Finally, the accent color should be merely a splash in the space (10%) to draw the eye and bring everything together.

With these rules in mind, you have the tools to transform your home into a stunning space that brings comfort, ease, and luxury. Have any questions? Contact us to learn more!
